Sustainable farming involves farming the soil, not the crop.  If the soil is kept fertile, the crop will thrive and food will be produced not just this season, but the next, and the next...

In order to maintain soil fertility, crops must be rotated and all waste organic matter composted. Compost is then applied before each planting.
 
Supplementary organic fertilisers such as eggshells, bonemeal, wood ash and phosphate rock can be added to give the plants nutrients which would otherwise be lacking.
