Pests attack unhealthy plants.  The best ways to avoid pests are: correct handling, careful transplanting, regular watering and ensuring the plants have the conditions they need.

Having a diverse farm with lots of different species including beneficial flowers and herbs is also what helps keep a balanced ecosystem that will regulate itself and control pests and diseases.  Plus, growing crops in association with one another allows different species to take advantage of each another to produce healthier plants and higher yields.
