The enormous dependence of conventional agriculture on fossil fuel consumption seriously jeopordises the food security of future generations when fossil fuels are not so freely available.


Nitrogen fertiliser, whose use has increased by 7 times in the last 40 years, comes predominately from natural gas.  And chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides etc. are petroleum-based.  World oil production is thought to peak in the next few years, if it has not peaked already.  The future of agriculture is at stake.
